Sad News: Philadelphia Eagles in serious danger following……
|Why the Eagles are in jeopardy after a humiliating loss to the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football
Are the Philadelphia Eagles doomed? After opening the season 10-1, just as they did during their Super Bowl run a year ago, the Eagles have fallen off their pedestal in recent weeks, losing their past two games to the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. These were not close losses to good teams, but rather blowout losses by at least 20 points. Losing to the 49ers and Cowboys isn’t particularly shameful, but losing by such a large margin suggests that the Eagles may not be up to the level of these strong teams.
Despite the fact that the Cowboys have taken the division lead, the Eagles still have a good chance of winning the NFC East because they have a far easier schedule than Dallas. They will meet the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Giants twice, and the Arizona Cardinals, while the Cowboys will face the Buffalo Bills, the Detroit Lions, and the Miami Dolphins. The Eagles will almost certainly earn a playoff spot in the coming weeks and have a chance to return to the Super Bowl.
However, this does not imply that everything is well in Philadelphia. Sure, Philadelphia may easily regain confidence with a few wins over the next several weeks, but they’re still in jeopardy for the playoffs. If the Eagles want to make another deep playoff run, they’ll almost certainly have to face the Cowboys and/or the 49ers. Both of these teams were unafraid of facing Philadelphia, with the 49ers proving they could beat the Eagles on the road.
Aside from rematches with the 49ers and Cowboys, the Eagles are in peril because those two teams showed their flaws. Following the 49ers’ victory, Nick Bosa outlined the recipe for stopping quarterback Jalen Hurts, which includes forcing Hurts to stay in the pocket and rush to the outside, rather than the inside. Hurts has also been less reliable than he was a year ago. He’s taken some unneeded sacks in recent weeks instead of tossing the ball away, and he’s also more prone to turnovers.
Defensively, the Eagles have showed that they are more vulnerable than in the past. The Eagles allowed at least 390 yards and more than 30 points in both games. Deebo Samuel ripped through the 49ers defense for three touchdowns, while Brock Purdy had four total touchdowns. Their run defense is also deteriorating. The Eagles, who were once ranked first in the NFL in run defense, have given up more than 140 yards on the ground in each of the last four games.
Their offensive run game has also stagnated. Their run game remains in the top-10, thanks in part to Hurts’ strength as a rusher, but their backs have not had the same momentum in a long time. D’Andre Swift hasn’t rushed for more than 100 yards since Week 3 and hasn’t had at least fifteen attempts in the last four games. The Eagles appeared to have an emerging rushing assault behind Swift early in the season, but they have yet to return to it.
