BREAKING: To increase depth, the Nuggets are urged to add a former Celtics big man.
|Being a first-apron team with minimal prospect of acquiring quality through a trade, the Denver Nuggets have a tough task this offseason as they look to improve depth.
However, Bobby Marks of ESPN thinks the team may find the depth it needs in the frontcourt by pursuing a big man who was once a member of the Boston Celtics and can be acquired at a reasonable cost.
The Nuggets star Nikola Jokic has criticized the lack of depth, pointing out that the best players can reach farther down their benches, according to Marks.
Jokic stated, “We definitely need to figure out a way to get more depth,” following the Nuggets’ NCAA tournament elimination. “It appears that the winning teams are the ones with longer benches and rotations. Minnesota, OKC, and Indiana.
According to Marks, the Nuggets are unable to recoup additional trade fees as a first-apron team and would forfeit starting player Michael Porter Jr. if they sought to acquire players through the trade market. However, he proposed that they sign Luke Kornet, a former forward for the Celtics, as a tax midlevel addition.
Marks added that Kornet would bring two important qualities — efficiency on the court and cost-efficiency.
“The Nuggets should use the tax midlevel to sign Luke Kornet to a two-year, $11.7 million contract. The free agent big man averaged 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in only 18 minutes per game last season for Boston,” Marks wrote. “The Celtics were plus-14.3 points per 100 possessions when he was on the court.”
