JUST IN: Dallas is ranked as one of the best places for a former cowboy in need to land.
|Based on Trevon Diggs’ progress in recovering from an ACL rupture this summer, the Dallas Cowboys may want some cornerback assistance at the start of the season.
Even though Diggs is playing, there are still concerns on the perimeter, where Kair Elam, a former first-round choice of the Buffalo Bills, is designated as the starter and is trying to put a new spark into his lackluster resume.
Thus, it is reasonable to assume that the team would benefit from assistance, or at the at least, insurance, at the position group. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox thinks that a familiar face—former cornerback Stephon Gilmore—could be able to help.
“The Cowboys should be interested in getting Gilmore back given their cornerback injury worries. Although Gilmore’s visit did not result in a contract, the Cowboys did not rule out the possibility of signing him in the future. They met with him in April.
According to Garrett Podell of CBS Sports, vice president Stephen Jones stated, “Well, we are always looking to make our roster better, which is what I would say about any player.” ”
How Might Gilmore Affect the Cowboys’ Secondary.
In 2024, Dallas’ passing defense was lackluster at best, giving up the 18th most passing yards per game (218.1) during a miserable 7–10 campaign.
The team’s problems were not caused by the secondary, but they were also not made any easier. According to Knox, the former Defensive Player of the Year might provide stability to a unit that appears to be potentially unstable on paper, even though he wouldn’t completely transform the team’s second level of defense.
“Stephon Gilmore is still a potential NFL starter at the age of 34.” According to Knox, “He started 17 games for the Cowboys in 2023 and 15 games for the Minnesota Vikings this past season.” He was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 and has five Pro Bowls to his name.

Gilmore may only be available for a one-year contract, but teams should consider him a starter or a high-volume rotational corner.
What Prevents Stephon Gilmore From Being Added?
The financial aspect of things will be Dallas’ biggest problem. Although the Cowboys have the ninth-most cap space in the NFL in 2025, a large portion of that will be saved for the rollover in the following season to help pay for the contracts of Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Dak Prescott.
The Vikings offered Gilmore a one-year, $7 million contract last summer, but following a solid but unimpressive 2024, it is unlikely that teams will want to pay the former All-Pro everything and more.
To help bolster the CB room, Dallas might want to try to sign Gilmore, a player they already know, if they can do it for around $3 million.
