BREAKING: Inter Miami wins the historic club match. A spot in the World Cup knockout stages

Florida’s Miami Gardens After playing to a 2-2 tie with Palmeiras of Brazil on Monday night at Hard Rock Stadium, Inter Miami CF achieved additional FIFA Club World Cup history by becoming the first MLS team to advance to the tournament’s knockout stages.

The Herons, who finished second in Group A with five points (1W-0L-2D) behind goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suárez, will face Group A winners Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday at Atlanta United’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the Round of 16.

In front of a nearly full house, which was split almost evenly between Miami and Palmeiras fans, Allende’s breakaway run from his own side of the field and his icy finish in the 16th minute gave the hosts a dream start.

In the 65th minute, the pink-clad supporters exploded once more, this time in support of Suárez. The iconic Uruguayan attacker beat goalie Weverton with a spectacular vintage solo goal that left several defenders in the dust.

With goals from Paulinho and Maurício, Palmeiras came back late to win the tie and take first position in Group A.
