Ole Miss honored one of its greatest legends, Don Kessinger, by retiring his iconic No. 11 jersey in a heartfelt ceremony that brought together former players, coaches, and fans to celebrate his remarkable legacy. Kessinger, who starred for the Rebels in the early 1960s before embarking on an outstanding Major League Baseball career, has long been considered one of the foundational figures in Ole Miss baseball history.

The ceremony, held at Oxford-University Stadium, was filled with emotion as current head coach Mike Bianco, former teammates, and generations of players paid tribute to Kessinger’s influence on the program. Known for his incredible defensive skills, Kessinger was a six-time MLB All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner during his 16-year career, mostly with the Chicago Cubs. Yet his contributions at Ole Miss extended far beyond his playing days. After returning to Oxford, Kessinger took over as head coach from 1991 to 1996, guiding a new era of Rebels baseball and mentoring countless young athletes.

Coach Bianco, who has become the winningest coach in Ole Miss history, credited Kessinger with laying the groundwork for the program’s success. “Don set the standard for what it means to be an Ole Miss Rebel,” Bianco said during the ceremony. “He’s been a mentor to me and so many of our players.”

Former players and teammates echoed that sentiment, describing Kessinger not only as an elite athlete but also as a humble leader, teacher, and ambassador for the game. The crowd erupted in applause as Kessinger, now in his 80s, stood alongside his family, smiling and waving in front of the giant No. 11 banner unveiled beyond the outfield wall.

The retirement of Don Kessinger’s jersey cements his place as a Rebel forever, inspiring future generations to uphold the excellence and integrity he has embodied for decades.
