Nebraska’s latest quarterback commit, Trae Taylor, has issued a public apology following backlash from his college commitment ceremony, where he was seen tossing aside an Illinois hat before announcing his pledge to the Cornhuskers.

Taylor, a four-star prospect out of Missouri, made headlines not only for his football talent but also for the controversial moment that sparked debate on social media. During the ceremony, Taylor was presented with several hats from top programs vying for his commitment. After briefly picking up the Illinois hat, he tossed it aside before donning Nebraska’s cap, a gesture some fans and commentators saw as disrespectful.

In a statement released on social media, Taylor expressed regret for his actions. “I want to sincerely apologize to the University of Illinois, its fans, and everyone who felt disrespected by what I did during my commitment,” Taylor wrote. “It was never my intention to insult anyone. In the excitement of the moment, I made a mistake, and I take full responsibility.”

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema and members of the football staff have not publicly commented on the incident, but several Illini players and fans voiced disappointment online. Nebraska fans, meanwhile, have largely stood by Taylor, focusing on the upside he brings to their program.

Taylor, ranked among the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2025 class, is expected to bring both athleticism and leadership to Nebraska’s offense. While the incident briefly cast a shadow over his big day, Taylor emphasized his respect for all programs that recruited him. “I have nothing but gratitude for every school that believed in me,” he added.

With his apology issued and commitment made, Taylor now looks ahead to his senior season and eventual arrival in Lincoln, aiming to let his play on the field define hi

s legacy.
