Kieran Dowell in Talks for Rangers Return – £830k Saving on the Line

Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell is reportedly in discussions over a potential exit from Ibrox, with a move that could see him reunite with his former manager David Wagner at Norwich City. The transfer, if completed, could free up a significant chunk of Rangers’ wage bill, potentially saving the club around £830,000 per year.

Talks Underway but ‘Work to Do’

According to reports, discussions between Dowell’s representatives and Norwich are ongoing, though sources indicate that an agreement is far from finalized. The midfielder has struggled to make an impact at Rangers since joining on a free transfer from Norwich last summer, with injuries and stiff competition limiting his game time under both Michael Beale and current boss Philippe Clement.

With Rangers looking to reshape their squad ahead of the crucial second half of the season, Clement is keen to trim the squad and make room for potential January reinforcements. Offloading Dowell’s wages would provide the club with additional financial flexibility to strengthen key areas.

Norwich Link Makes Sense

A return to Norwich City appears logical, given Dowell’s prior success at Carrow Road under Wagner. The 26-year-old played a key role in Norwich’s promotion-winning campaign in the 2020-21 season, delivering several crucial performances that endeared him to the Canaries’ fanbase.

Despite falling down the pecking order at Rangers, Dowell’s technical ability and experience in the English Championship make him an attractive option for Norwich, who are pushing for a playoff spot this season. Wagner is reportedly open to a reunion, believing he can get the best out of the midfielder once again.

Rangers’ Midfield Reshuffle Continues

Dowell’s potential departure aligns with Rangers’ ongoing midfield overhaul, as Clement looks to build a squad capable of sustaining a title challenge and competing in European competitions. The Belgian manager has already indicated that changes are expected in January, with the club linked to several midfield targets.

With key players like John Lundstram and Todd Cantwell cementing their places in the starting XI, Dowell’s first-team opportunities at Ibrox appear limited. A move away would benefit all parties, allowing Rangers to reduce their wage bill while giving Dowell a fresh start in a familiar environment.

What Next?

While talks are progressing, an agreement between Rangers and Norwich is not yet guaranteed. Negotiations will likely hinge on whether Norwich can match Dowell’s current wages or if Rangers will need to contribute to the deal in some form.

If the move goes through, it could be the first of several January exits from Ibrox as Philippe Clement reshapes his squad for the remainder of the campaign.
