Ange Postecoglou is under serious pressure at Tottenham after Everton defeat
Tottenham Hotspur find themselves rooted in a turbulent second season under Ange Postecoglou, with results failing to meet expectations.
Spurs were handed their 12th defeat of the Premier League season on Sunday at the hands of an Everton side battling their own relegation fears. The result not only highlighted their defensive weaknesses but also raised questions about the North Londoners’ lack of squad depth.
Even though Tottenham sit an embarrassing 15th in the table, Daniel Levy and Co. have continued to give Ange Postecoglou time, with transfer news guru Fabrizio Romano suggesting that they have decided to back the 59-year-old with key signings. However, we are yet to see any evidence of Daniel Levy doing that thus far, with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky being the only new face to arrive at White Hart Lane regardless of the unprecedented injury situation.
With just one win in the last 10 Premier League games, Postecoglou has been warned that he is under huge pressure at the club. This is the information relayed by the Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick as he thinks injuries could not be the excuse for Spurs’ lacklustre display at Goodison Park and the coach must take a significant share of the blame. However, the Hotspur Way chiefs are in no hurry to sack the Australian, in spite of a torrid run of form in the league.
“There is a compelling case that the club’s slow start to the transfer window has badly exacerbated the situation; Postecoglou has been repeatedly calling for a new forward since the start of the month, but Spurs have lost three forwards to injury in the past 10 days,” Dan Kilpatrick said.
Injuries, though, could not excuse the level of their performance on Merseyside, for which the manager must take a significant share of the blame.
“There has been no appetite at Spurs to sack Postecoglou, with the club committed to a long-term project and accepting that he has been hamstrung by injuries.
“The manager must, though, be considered under serious pressure, with Spurs in desperate need of addressing their spiralling league form fast.”
Indeed, Big Ange does have a myriad of injury troubles to contend with at the moment, with almost a full starting XI of players on the treatment table. Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson have been added to the unfortunate list, with the attacking duo set to spend weeks on the sidelines. The Lilywhites’ results have been unacceptable of late regardless of their injury situation as they sit only four points above 16th-placed Everton.
