Alabama football makes staff changes to Crimson Tide defense ahead of 2025 season
Alabama football has shifted responsibilities on its 2025 defensive coaching staff.
After firing co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler on Friday, the Crimson Tide seemingly promoted former Washington co-defensive coordinator Chuck Morrell to linebackers coach, according to an update of the staff page on the Alabama football website.
Morrell worked as an analyst and a special assistant to the head coach at Alabama in 2024.
Kane Wommack’s title is now only defensive coordinator.
The rest of the titles remain the same for Alabama’s defensive coaching staff: Freddie Roach as associate head coach and defensive line coach, Maurice Linguist as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach and Christian Robinson as outside linebackers coach.
Morrell is a former defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator under Kalen DeBoer at Sioux Falls. He was also DeBoer’s safeties coach at Fresno State in 2020 and 2021.
Morrell was the head coach at Montana Tech from 2011-19.
