Minor killed in 2-vehicle crash on US 45 in Wayne County
A two-vehicle crash that stalled traffic on U.S. Highway 45 in Wayne County Thursday morning, claimed the life of a minor, according to law enforcement.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop J Public Affairs Officer, Taylor Shows said around 7:30 a.m., troopers responded to the crash. The Mississippi Highway Patrol said the crash happened on U.S. 45 past Pineville Road.
According to Shows, a 2020 Western-Star Sanitation truck was parked on the north side of U.S. 45 when it collided with a 2012 Dodge Ram traveling north on the highway.
A 3-year-old passenger of the Dodge Ram received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the MHP Troop J PAO.
Shows said the driver of the Ram was also injured from the crash and was taken to a local hospital.
No other injuries were reported.
Wayne County Emergency Management said U.S. 45 Northbound lanes about three and a half miles north of Buckatunna are closed due to the accident.
All loaded commercial vehicles were encouraged to find an alternate route.
MHP says first responders see these types of tragedies often, but it never gets easier.
“I want everyone else that’s not having to deal with this to look at this and think, this can happen to you. Tragedy doesn’t care who you are, where you are. It can happen in the blink of an eye. You need to be prepared. You need to take steps to ensure that this doesn’t happen to you and your family. And it’s simple steps, simple, simple steps,” said Shows.
There’s no word yet on what caused the crash.
