The Mets’ $230 million star player, who came up through their farm system, is expected to leave Queens and join the Mariners.
The 2024 season was a great change for the New York Mets, but now, they have to get to work.
The Mets are on a roll after making it to the National League Championship Series, and they’re looking strong for 2025. Most of the players from the playoff team have become free agents, so we don’t know what the team will look like on Opening Day.
The Mets are interested in trying to get Juan Soto, and first baseman Pete Alonso is also available to other teams. A popular player with the Mets, who has hit the second-most home runs since he started his career, might be looking for a new team.
On Friday, Andy McCullough from The Athletic guessed that Alonso would join the Seattle Mariners this winter. The same report predicted that the four-time All-Star would get a five-year contract worth $130 million earlier in November.
“Perhaps more than any other player, Alonso is waiting to see where Juan Soto lands. The Mets harbor interest in bringing back Alonso, a homegrown star,” McCullough said.
“The team has a backup plan, though, in the form of infielder Mark Vientos.
And the Mariners are so desperate for offense, especially from the infield corners, that the front office could ignore Alonso’s lack of on-base skills and pay a premium for his power.”
Alonso, 30, had a down year by his own standards in 2024, but still crushed 34 home runs with a 123 OPS+. Plus, he had some monster home runs in the postseason, including one that kept the Mets alive against the Milwaukee Brewers, so that will serve to inflate his value.
Seattle hasn’t made the playoffs for the last two years, even though they have great pitchers. They might really want to trade for Alonso. If the Mets miss out on getting both Soto and Alonso, it would be really bad for them.
