SEC Makes Texas Announcement After 10-Point Win Over Texas A&M
The Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies renewed their rivalry on Saturday for the first time since the 2011 season. The Longhorns won that game in a 27-25 thriller in College Station.
No. 3 Texas entered their Week 14 matchup looking for bragging rights over their rival in the Lone Star State and to stay in position to earn a bye in the College Football Playoff. No. 20 Texas A&M needed to win on Saturday to have a chance to stay alive in the CFP conversation.
The Longhorns raced out to a 17-0 lead at halftime.
Texas A&M’s defense stiffened in the second half, forcing two turnovers, including a third-quarter pick-six of Quinn Ewers that put the Aggies back in the game.
A late fourth-quarter turnover on downs at the Texas four-yard line crushed the Aggies’ chances of beating the Longhorns. Texas then forced a fumble of Texas A&M’s offense before escaping Kyle Field with a 17-7 win and improving to 11-1 on the season.
Following the end of the game, the SEC officially announced Texas would play in the conference championship on Dec. 7 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
“HORNS ARE ATL BOUND,” the SEC posted. “Texas has officially clinched a spot in the 2024 SEC Football Championship Game!”
Texas will face a 10-2 Georgia Bulldogs squad that defeated the Longhorns 30-15 on Oct. 20 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin
The winner of the SEC championship will earn an automatic bid from the CFP selection committee and a bye in the first round of the playoff.
Texas made the SEC Championship Game in its first season in the conference. They did so by beating a Texas A&M team that could have clinched a berth in the SEC championship with a win at home on Saturday night.
