Texas QB Quinn Ewers pitched as replacement for Heisman candidate if he leaves Longhorns, enters college football’s transfer portal

FanSided’s Quinn Everts pitched Texas QB Quinn Ewers as a potential replacement for Dillon Gabriel at Oregon if the Longhorns star entered college football’s transfer portal in the offseason. Ewers partook in senior night, so whether he goes to the NFL or another school, it appears that 2024 will be his last year in Austin.

Everts sees UCLA transfer Dante Moore as an undeserving successor to Gabriel in Eugene.

“Dillon Gabriel has hung around Heisman discussions all season as the Ducks quarterback has been everything Dan Lanning could have hoped for in a transfer. But with Gabriel departing for the NFL next season, the Ducks will have a hole at quarterback that Ewers could fill instantly.

The success of Gabriel this year shows that Lanning can acclimate a transfer quarterback into his system pretty easily, and Ewers could be the next example of that,” Everts wrote.

Dante Moore is set to start for the Ducks in 2025

“Dante Moore is set to start for the Ducks in 2025, but the former 5-star recruit didn’t impress much in his freshman season at UCLA before transferring to UO. Moore is highly talented, but Ewers’ experience and reliability would give him a pretty clear advantage for the starting job.

If Ewers is worried about weapons in Eugene, all he needs to do is watch the highlight tape of Dakorien Moore, the 5-star wide receiver who will be donning a Ducks jersey next season.

Moore chose Oregon over Georgia, Ohio State

Moore chose Oregon over Georgia, Ohio State and Alabama among (many) others, and the top non-quarterback recruit in the Class of 2025 could make an instant impact with Ewers under center.”

Ewers could potentially become the third straight upperclassman transfer to become a Heisman candidate at Oregon. Bo Nix’s arrival in 2022 led to him being a finalist in his second year, while Gabriel has quickly become a Heisman finalist leading the No. 1 team in the nation.

Ewers’s NIL value will make him a pricey addition for whoever he ends up with, but leading Texas to a Big 12 Championship and College Football Playoff berth in 2023 is enough to make the GM who’d land him a celebrated man.
