2025 DB Durante Speer commits to East Carolina

East Carolina has picked up a commitment from class of 2025 safety Durante Speer, from Columbia High School in Decatur, Georgia. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder officially visited ECU this weekend, making his pledge during his trip to Greenville.

Other schools that offered Speer include Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, and Kent State. He initially visited ECU on March 23, during spring practice. The relationship continued to grow until he announced his commitment to ECU on Saturday. Speer was offered by ECU back on Feb. 1, and was recruited by safeties coach Damon Magazu.

Speer primarily plays cornerback for Columbia, but he profiles best in ECU’s defense as a safety. He had 44 tackles as a junior with a sack, a pick, and eight passes defended. Columbia went 9-4 this past season. Speer shows strong coverage skills on film and has a frame that should be able to add mass and develop over time. He also runs track, where he set a school record with a 50.13 400-meter on April 24 earlier this spring. Speer has also established marks of 24.60 in the 200-meter, and a 11.75 in the 100-meter.

Speer was part of nine official visitors on campus this weekend. He is one of four players overall to commit in the 2025 class, joining wide receiver Connor Hodge, offensive lineman Jonathan Stokes, and athlete Johnny Williams .

247Sports evaluated Speer as a three-star safety, ranked the 116th-best player at his position in the nation, and the 132nd-best player in Georgia.
