Power skipper expected to return for Giants clash, forward “hasn’t been at his best”

Looking to keep the place in the top four with a win over the Giants this Sunday, Port Adelaide could be boosted significantly, with star captain Connor Rozee expected to return from injury for this Sunday’s clash against the GWS Giants.

Rozee’s return comes at a pivotal time for the Power, who have a tough stretch over the next five weeks, facing GWS, Brisbane, the Western Bulldogs and Gold Coast, who are undefeated at People’s First Stadium.

The 24-year-old skipper missed the disappointing loss to Carlton before the bye, adding to a six-week period marked by his injuries, where his leadership and star power through the middle has been notably absent.

Cornes was less optimistic about the availability of forward Willie Rioli, who has been sidelined with a calf injury sustained against North Melbourne and still needs to pass several fitness tests before being cleared to play.

Cornes hinted toward his absence, emphasising that he is uncertain for Sunday’s game and that the team is proceeding with caution regarding his recovery.

Another focal point for the Power is the form and fitness of veteran forward Charlie Dixon. The 33-year-old has struggled recently, failing to post a score in several of his outings and being subbed out with minimal impact against Carlton

Dixon’s decline in form has sparked discussions within the club about his role moving forward. Cornes acknowledged that Dixon is aware of his struggles and has had candid discussions with both Cornes and head coach Ken Hinkley about the steps needed to regain his form.

“We’ve had some really good chats with Charlie. He’s very honest and knows he hasn’t been at his best,” Cornes said.

“But he’s still a crucial part of our team, and we believe he can turn things around. That said, we have Ollie Lord in good form, ready to step up if needed.”

Lord has shown some promise in the SANFL recently without setting the world on fire, booting two majors in the Magpies’ meagre four-goal performance against Sturt.

While the Power have been far from world-beaters in 2024, they still hold a spot in the top four with a healthy percentage and seem aware of their need to make necessary adjustments to maintain their position in the premiership race.
