Gareth Southgate sheds some light on Anthony Gordon injury as Euro 2024 deadline looms
Anthony Gordon has grafted harder than anybody this season to gain recognition as an international-level footballer.
The Newcastle United winger picked up the club’s Player of the Year award to go with his summer’s Player of the Tournament award as England U21s were crowned European Champions.
Gordon was so consistent for Newcastle last season that it was surprising that it took until March this year before Gareth Southgate acknowledged his efforts with his first senior England call up.
The 23-year-old made his full England debut up against clubmate Bruno Guimaraes in the friendly against Brazil before making a brief appearance in the following game against Belgium.
Gordon was injured following a shocking tackle in the game against Manchester United
In a case of bad timing (and worse refereeing) Anthony Gordon picked up an ankle injury in the game against Manchester United as Sofyan Amrabat chopped down Gordon in the box, ripping his sock and breaking the skin on his achilles as the referee waved away the penalty protests, backed up by Stevie Wonder on VAR.
As a result of that challenge, Gordon missed Newcastle’s final game of the season and the trip to Australia while he recovered.
Now, after missing several training sessions, Gareth Southgate, who needs to trim seven players from his current squad of 33 before Euro 2024 starts in two weeks, has confirmed that Gordon will not be fit to play at St James’ Park tonight in the friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
