Dusty May talks options with Michigan basketball’s last remaining scholarship

Michigan basketball looks almost entirely different than it did two months ago, when Dusty May was hired as the Wolverines’ new head coach.

On Friday, April 19, at 4:36 p.m., four-star basketball prospect Justin Pippen committed to Michigan. That decision represented Dusty May’s first new pledge as the U-M coach, and it also marked the beginning of what became a wild 72 hours for the Wolverines. In the three days after Pippen’s announcement, May and Michigan added five players through the Transfer Portal to rebuild a roster that needed the reinforcement. And in the week that followed, U-M added a couple more players with previous ties to May, including prized big man Vlad Goldin.

With summer workouts for Michigan just around the corner, the team still has one available scholarship spot. Dusty May joined Brian Boesch on “Defend the Block” this week and discussed what he’s considering as the Wolverines look to fill that vacancy:

Even with the admissions, there’s different time periods of when we can get guys admitted. High school players are different than graduate students. There’s different deadlines and whatnot.

We’re being aggressive this week to try to, I guess, cast. We’ve been casting a big net for the last couple of weeks, but we’ve also been extremely selective. And there’s probably a few guys that we would have went on earlier in the process before we filled out our roster.

But now it’s either going to be someone that really, really impacts today — winning immediately — and also fits into the group as far as skill set and what the holes in our roster might be.

But we also might look at a young, developmental player, somebody that can help us down the line and we’ll learn and bang against these guys day in, day out. We’re looking at it from several different angles. Or we may hold tight and carry the scholarship over for next year.
