Lamar Jackson, the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, had severe consequences for skipping OTAs this spring. The NFL MVP candidate for 2023 has decided not to take part in the Ravens’ optional programme, one year after agreeing to a $260 million, five-year agreement.
The Baltimore Ravens fell short last season
Jackson demonstrated his value to the league during the previous season, but the Ravens were unable to overcome Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship. Jackson isn’t giving the NFL community the impression that he’s prepared to get to work and exact revenge on his opponents by refusing to attend OTAs with his colleagues.
Lamar Jackson suffers consequences from missing voluntary OTAs
According to Mike Florio of NBC Sports, the two-time NFL MVP will forfeit $750,000 for missing optional organised team activities this offseason. Florio previously conjectured that Jackson might have been “miffed” by the Ravens front office for delaying his extension.
He has to take part in 80 percent of the offseason sessions, with the exception of the required minicamp, in order to be eligible [for the workout incentive]. We’re informed that he has already missed too many workouts to be eligible for the $750,000 this year.
At first, it was thought that the yearly $750,000 payout was an offseason roster bonus. They are bonuses for the workout, not the case. His 2024 salary reduces from $32.5 million to $31.75 million if he is unable to receive the bonus.
Jackson is keeping money in his owner’s pocket
According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Jackson is not required to participate in the OTAs’ voluntary phase. However, by showing up at the Ravens’ stadium, he will still miss out on a sizable sum of money that he could have otherwise received on his contract.
Even if $750,000 is only a small portion of Jackson’s base pay per year, it’s still a significant sum of money in this recession. Jackson is keeping the money his agent negotiated for him in his owner’s pocket for an undisclosed purpose.
