University of Louisville football coach Jeff Brohm was looking for a linebacker with some experience in the transfer portal.

And that’s exactly what Brohm found with Texas State transfer Dan Foster.

A four-year player who has seen action in 43 career games at two stops, Foster made an official visit to Louisville on Wednesday and has committed to the Cardinals. He’ll join the Cardinals during the summer and will be a key piece to the defense next season.

U of L has returning starter TJ Quinn, along with sophomore Stanquan Clark to go with redshirt freshman TJ Capers, and Texas A&M transfer Jurriente Davis. But U of L did lose Jaylin Alderman, who started all 13 games last season, earlier this week to the portal.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Foster is a veteran guy who will fill the void. He started 13 games last season at Texas State and he’s played in 43 games during his career there and at Marshall. He has an 82-inch wing span.

Foster has been a hot target in the transfer portal recently, landing an offer from the U of L staff on Monday. He has already been offered by Cincinnati, UConn, Western Kentucky, Georgia Southern, New Mexico, Jacksonville State, New Mexico State, Buffalo, and Arkansas State.

A three-star prospect from Riviera Beach, Fla., out of the Class of 2019, Foster redshirted his first season at Marshall and then played in eight games on the defensive line as a redshirt freshman during the 2020 season. In 2021, Foster played in 10 games but it was mainly on special teams. He had six tackles and a fumble recovery.

Foster played in 12 games at Marshall in 2022 and had seven tackles and a pass breakup, leaving the Thundering Herd after the season.

In his lone season at Texas State, Foster was fifth on the team in tackles. He started all 13 games and had 52 tackles, including 25 solo stops, 3.5 tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries, and three quarterback hurries. He had a season-high 10 tackles against UTSA.

Foster will have one season left at his next stop.
