The offseason is underway for Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program, as James Okonkwo plans on entering the transfer portal.
Okonkwo was a late addition to the UNC basketball program’s roster for the 2023-2024 season as he transferred in from West Virginia. The Maidenhead, England native became the third ever Tar Heel to come from England, as the hope is that he would be a depth piece in the frontcourt.
However, Okonkwo couldn’t carve out a role in the UNC basketball program’s rotation, as he was limited to just 15 games while averaging just under three minutes per-contest.
Now, Okonkwo will look for his third college home, as he aims to play a bigger role at his next stop. His athleticism and shot blocking ability should be an intriguing option for programs looking for additional frontcourt depth.
Given he was a late addition to the roster, it felt like it would take some time for Okonkwo to earn a role on last year’s squad. With Armando Bacot and Jalen Washington in the mix, there wasn’t many minutes at the center position to go around, which also impacted his playing time.
This is the current state of college basketball, as programs around the country are looking to figure out their roster situations heading into next season. Okonkwo will look to continue his career elsewhere while the UNC basketball program looks to fill the newly-available scholarship with a player who can help the 2024-2025 squad.
Okonkwo won’t be the last offseason news for the UNC basketball program, as many more decisions are on the horizon over the next couple of weeks.
Stay tuned.
