One less name in the battle for Oklahoma’s starting kicker spot.
After not appearing on the Sooners’ official spring roster released on Monday, redshirt sophomore kicker Gavin Marshall has formally entered his name into the transfer portal on Wednesday with multiple years of eligibility remaining.
Marshall committed to Oklahoma in July of 2021 out of Frisco High School in Frisco, TX and was a member of the team for the past two seasons. The Texas product appeared very sparingly in his time in Norman, attempting just two extra points last season in the opener against Arkansas State – making them both. He also made an appearance in the Sooners’ win over Tulsa, handling kickoff duties three times and producing one touchback.
Marshall was then limited for the majority of the 2023 season with an undisclosed injury that was revealed by Brent Venables in late November. With struggles from starting kicker Zach Schmit, there was some thought Marshall could have been another option – but his health kept that from being a possibility according to the OU head coach.
At his press conference to open up spring camp last week, Venables noted that there would be an open competition across many of the special teams jobs including place kicker despite Schmit being back on the roster after serving in that role the last two seasons. The primary contenders, at the time, were considered to be Schmit, Marshall, Florida State transfer Tyler Keltner and possibly true freshman Liam Evans from nearby Moore, OK.
