The former Sooners QB is in line for a big contract extension with the Bucs, and NFL Network insiders say the deal is all but done.
Baker Mayfield appears one big step closer to signing a massive contract extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapaport, the Bucs are “closing in” on an extension with the former Oklahoma quarterback.
Rapaport reported on Twitter that Mayfield will get a three-year deal worth $100 million overall, including $50 million guaranteed.
Another NFL Network insider, Tom Pelissero, reported on Twitter that Mayfield will get $30 million guaranteed in Year 1, with another $10 million in 2025 guaranteed at signing, plus another $10 million “for injury” that becomes fully vested next year.
Mayfield played for three teams in 2022, then signed a one-year deal with the Bucs for $6.85 million in 2023.
He’ll make more than $33 million annualized with his new deal.
On Feb. 28, Spotrac projected Mayfield would get a four-year, $120 million contract with $53 million guaranteed, but his new deal exceeds that on an annual basis.
Mayfield, 29, was the No. 1 overall pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2018 after winning the Heisman Trophy in 2017 and leading the Sooners to two appearances in the College Football Playoff and three straight Big 12 Conference championships.
He originally signed a four-year, $32.7 million contract with the Browns, which included a $21.8 million signing bonus.
The Browns traded him to Carolina in 2022, and the Panthers released him. He had a short but dramatic stint with the Los Angeles Rams before the Bucs signed him prior to the 2023 season.
