Matt Flynn, a West Coast recruit, will be out for up to three months following surgery to repair a detached tendon in his knee.

Prior to their first preseason game, Flynn, the Eagles’ ruckman, had an injury during the team’s captain’s run last week. He reported feeling discomfort in his knee and shin after diving into a ruck bag during a drill.

Since then, scans have revealed serious damage to Flynn’s leg; as a result, the former GWS big man will need surgery to address the condition.

“He will need crutches for a brief period of time following surgery before beginning his recuperation. It is anticipated that he will be out of the game for ten to twelve weeks.

“Because of the unusual nature of the injury, unfortunately, we cannot be any more specific but look forward to a fit and healthy Matt returning to the field.”

Flynn, a free agent, signed with the Eagles during the most recent off-season from the Giants, joining the Western Australian team as their top ruck option for 2024.

Over the course of eight seasons, he played 33 games for GWS, all of which were in the previous three years.
