Roosters star Joey Manu hasn’t exactly put an end to speculation over a transition to rugby union, albeit a move to a rival NRL team remains unlikely.

Manu’s contract expires at the end of the 2024 season, although he has yet to decide on his future step.

It was claimed in late December that Manu was considering a transfer to Japanese rugby to play for one season before returning to the Roosters in the second half of 2025.

The Dragons have also shown an interest in Manu, but according to the 27-year-old’s statements to the SMH, he will play in the NRL for only the Tricolours.

“I don’t want to play against the Roosters at all. Not at all. Manu added, “I couldn’t do what the club has done for me throughout my career.”

“I’ve been with the Roosters for ten years now. It’s been a long time, and I adore the location. That makes it difficult to go, but we will see what happens.”

Manu is apparently in extension discussions with the Roosters, but he acknowledges the attraction of rugby union is appealing.

The Golden Boot winner played rugby union in high school before joining the Roosters as a youngster.

“It’s a choice, and I believe rugby is a challenge. If I go to play rugby, I am focused on the game, not on returning.

“You could certainly go there and come back, but the goal isn’t just to play for a few months and then return. It isn’t truly that.

“It’s still only an option at this point.” But now it’s time to have a look at the possibilities available in both codes. Growing up, I used to play both codes.
