Andru Phillips, a cornerback from Kentucky, is a draft prospect for the Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are preparing for the next generation of athletes to join their squad in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Raiders are embarking on a new era in Las Vegas under Coach Antonio Pierce and General Manager Tom Telesco, and the new players they sign will form the backbone of their squad. This new leadership is seeking for athletes who embody the ethos that they intend to maintain. Pierce did a terrific job developing that culture, which is based on relentless competition and aggressive defense.

One player who could fit that culture is Kentucky cornerback Andru Phillips. The former Wildcat defensive back plays with the competitive edge that Pierce would covet. Phillips finished his collegiate career with 82 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and 10 passes defended. He did not record an interception or forced fumble.

Andru Phillips of Kentucky might be the most competitive cornerback in the 2024 NFL Draft.Jordan Prather/USA TODAY Sports Jordan Prather/USA TODAY Sports Phillips will compete for the American team in the Reese’s Senior Bowl later today. He drew attention during training this week with spectacular pass breakups against some of the top receivers in the draft class. Phillips is 5-foot-10 and weighs 191 pounds, but he plays much bigger than his size. He is one of the most athletic corners in the draft, with exceptional speed and agility at closing on receivers. He possesses quick feet and fluid hips, which should carry over to the next level.

Despite his diminutive stature, Phillips plays hard on every snap, and while he is an inconsistent tackler, he pushes past blocks in the run game to make a play. Even if he lacks the physical advantage, he will never take a play-off. According to Pro Football Focus, Phillips was targeted 58 times and allowed 39 receptions for 438 yards and four touchdowns. Phillips excels at man coverage, and his competitiveness should translate as well. As previously stated, Phillips is an inconsistent tackler, and his bulk does him no favors. He may struggle with the league’s larger receivers.

Phillips is projected as a third-round draft pick, but a strong performance in the Senior Bowl could boost his ranking. If Pierce and the Raiders can overlook his physical limitations and believe in his competitiveness, Phillips could be a nice match with the Silver and Black. The NFL Draft will take place in Detroit, Michigan, on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders presently have the 13th overall pick.
