When you’re a kid playing football in the backyard, no one’s pretending to be playing an early-season game. There has to be something on the line, and that’s usually an (imaginary) Lombardi Trophy. And while the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t quite at that stage of the season just yet, they are staring down a must-win game in Week 18.

Well, almost a must-win game. Pittsburgh can technically still qualify for the postseason even with a loss (we’ll get to that later), but winning is the easiest way to punch the playoff ticket.

There is a catch, though. While this sort of scenario would be the perfect situation for the team’s franchise quarterback to step up and become a hero, Kenny Pickett won’t be the starter. Instead, Mason Rudolph is getting the nod.

While you probably think of a quarterback’s arm as their most important asset, mobility can’t be ignored. All the talent in the world becomes irrelevant if you’re an immobile traffic cone in the pocket.

That reality has been part of what’s keeping Pickett out of the action.

In early December, the Steelers’ signal-caller tried to run for a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals. He was stopped short of the goal line and appeared to turn his ankle on the play. He left the game and didn’t return.

When the Steelers face the Ravens on Saturday, a win has to be the goal. Pittsburgh doesn’t control their own destiny, but victory means Tomlin’s men can qualify for the postseason with either a Buffalo or Jacksonville loss or a tie in the Houston-Indianapolis game. (In the event of a loss, a Jacksonville loss, a Denver win and a non-tie result in the Houston-Indy game will also yield a playoff berth.)
