The Seattle Seahawks could be in for a long offseason unless they receive some assistance in making the NFL playoffs. The Seahawks’ issues go much beyond quarterback, but it is reasonable to wonder what the team’s ceiling is with Geno Smith as QB1.
Smith agreed to a three-year, $75 million contract with Seattle last summer, but there is an out this offseason. By dismissing Smith, the Seahawks would incur a $17.4 million dead cap penalty and might possibly attempt to trade the veteran.
The Chicago Bears just secured the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but with Justin Fields on the roster, they may be willing to sell the pick. In 2024, Chicago has a chance to have two top-10 picks. The #1 pick is part of the team’s transaction with the Panthers to move up in the draft to get Bryce Young.
With USC star quarterback Caleb Williams potentially available, the Seahawks would be prudent to at least investigate the cost of a blockbuster deal to move up to No. 1. ESPN’s Dan Graziano makes the case for Chicago selling the No. 1 selection for the second year in a row.
“I don’t know what the Bears will ultimately do in the lead-up to the draft,” Graziano wrote in an article titled “Judging the biggest overreactions for NFL Week 17” on December 31, 2023. “Fields has performed admirably down the stretch as the Bears appear to have rallied around embattled coach Matt Eberflus, possibly saving his job.” Trading the first pick, accumulating more picks, and building around Fields is a viable strategy. Some may even argue that it is their best.”
