Norvell of Florida State is named coach of the year, receiving the Dodd Trophy.

Mike Norvell of Florida State won the Dodd Trophy as national coach of the year after leading the Seminoles to a 13-0 record.

The No. 4 Seminoles will face No. 6 Georgia in the Orange Bowl on Saturday.

The award, which was revealed on Friday, recognizes scholarship, leadership, and integrity, as well as on-field accomplishment. First-year coaches and award winners from the previous two years are ineligible.

“The values of athletic success, academic excellence and character represented by this award align with what we emphasize in our program,” Norvell said in an e-mail. “Those characteristics have been on display through some truly challenging circumstances this season, but I am so proud of how our team responded each and every time.”

Norvell guided the Seminoles to their first Atlantic Coast Conference title since 2014.

Norvell is Florida State’s second Dodd Trophy winner, following Bobby Bowden in 1980.

For the 2022-23 academic year, Norvell had 35 players selected Academic All-ACC. This team got a 983 Academic Progress Rate (APR), which was tied for the 23rd highest among FBS institutions.

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl annually awards the Dodd Trophy, named after former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Dodd. A panel of past winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family, and a College Football Hall of Fame member selects the winner.

Willie Fritz of Tulane earned the 2022 award. Luke Fickell of Cincinnati won in 2021.

Michigan’s Nugent and Texas’ Worthy both said they’ll be ready to go.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Both Michigan and Texas anticipate that important players who were limited in their conference championship games will be available for the College Football Playoff.

On Nov. 25, Michigan center Drake Nugent sprained his ankle in a win over Ohio State. The Stanford graduate transfer wasn’t at his best a week later against Iowa in the Big Ten championship game, and he claimed he probably wouldn’t have been able to play a week after that.

The last time Texas played, top receiver Xavier Worthy injured his right ankle against Oklahoma State in the Big 12 championship game.

Worthy stated on Friday that he is prepared for the Longhorns’ Sugar Bowl game against No. 2 Washington in New Orleans.
