Rising Safety Will Return To Florida State In 2024

After a poor start to the Early Signing Period, Florida State needed some positive news. With one game remaining before the offseason, the coaching staff must keep its young talent while also strengthening the roster through the transfer portal.

The Seminoles are determined to keep their top players in garnet and gold. FSU NIL Collective, The Battle’s End, revealed on Thursday afternoon that redshirt sophomore safety Shyheim Brown would return to Tallahassee in 2024. He’s coming off a breakout season after taking over as a full-time starter.

Brown started all 13 games and finished with a career-high 46 tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, three pass deflections, one fumble recovery, and one interception. He was the Seminoles’ most dependable player and the most steady face in the lineup. Brown played 677 snaps, which was a team record.

After joining the Seminoles as an unheralded recruit in the 2021 class, the Florida native has blossomed into a rising star. Brown impressed right away in his first year with the school, but he didn’t crack the rotation until last season. That paid off when he stopped the game-tying extra point in New Orleans to secure FSU’s victory over LSU.

Brown appeared in 29 games with 15 starts during his three years at Florida State, totaling 85 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, five pass deflections, two fumble recoveries, and one interception. Following the 2023 season, he was awarded Third-Team All-ACC and received the Monk Bonasorte Award for the defensive player with the most heart.

Brown is expected to be one of the team’s top overall players next season. Along with potential true freshman Conrad Hussey and a youthful safety corps, his presence in the defensive backfield will be critical.

Brown and running back Lawrance Toafili have already announced their intention to return to Tallahassee for another season. Dennis Briggs, a defensive tackle, is also looking for a seventh season of eligibility.
