Cowboys QB, Dak Prescott’s massive extension is dependent on critical movements.

Dak Prescott entered a pivotal 2023-24 NFL season that might have a significant impact on his long-term future with the team. Postseason risks abound, but he has delivered spectacularly through the Dallas Cowboys’ first 13 games. And now the experienced quarterback will be compensated.

However, there are a few problems to work out, as owner Jerry Jones alluded to during the NFL’s annual meetings.

“Here’s the thing, this is sensitive in that it does involve moving assets,” he told Dallas News’ Calvin Watkins. “It’s not Dak’s fault; that’s just how it is.” It’s sensitive, so the fact that we’re expecting a new deal reflects all of that. We know there will be [restructuring]. You can’t have everything. It will require some changes to get it done.”

In 2024-25, Prescott will reach the last year of a four-year, $160 million contract that is already limiting the Cowboys’ financial freedom. A contract restructure might provide them with much-needed respite, allowing them to keep the roster strong and balanced. Some players will almost certainly have to be released in order to make place for what appears to be a historic extension.

Despite such costs, Jerry Jones insists on making another large commitment to Dak Prescott. “I never imagined we wouldn’t be making a contract,” he remarked on Tuesday. “I believe that’s the best way for me to put it.” The issue of doing it or not doing it has never been on the table from my standpoint here.”

If Dallas ever scores a landmark playoff win or wins in this century, Jones will be much more eager to sign Prescott to a new contract. A away game against the Buffalo Bills will be another solid warm-up before the journey begins.
