Oklahoma Sooners Lose Talented Running Back To The Transfer Portal

The Oklahoma Sooners are going to need to revamp their offense in 2024. On the same day that quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, another offensive weapon is following suit. Running back Marcus Major Jr. announced he is entering the transfer portal.

Oklahoma Sooners Marcus Major Jr. Entering Transfer Portal

Major Jr. played a role in the backfield in 2023 but due to the competition with Junior Tawee Walker and Gavin Sawchuk. He also dealt with some injuries that limited his carries in 2023. He was able to rack up 308 yards and a score during the 2023 campaign. No doubt that this is a situation where the player is leaving to try and get more playing time. Being in a crowded backfield is not what many players want. However, the small exodus from Oklahoma is interesting.

Why Are Players Leaving?

Ultimately, some of it is the new college football landscape that we all are going to have to get used to. Players want more NIL money or are trying to find an offense that better fits their skills. College football conferences are changing next year with Oklahoma joining Texas in the SEC. It seems odd that players would want to leave a program that is going to a conference that is one of the preferred for the College Football Playoff.

The good news for the Oklahoma Sooners and many other programs that are losing players is that the transfer portal is also a place to gain players. I’m sure that the Sooners will have no trouble landing a couple of great players from the portal to help reload their team for 2024.
