Nebraska Cornhuskers Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield pays his first visit to former Ohio State Buckeye quarterback Kyle McCord.

Former Ohio State Buckeye Kyle McCord has been identified as a potential starting quarterback for the 2024 season by the Nebraska Cornhuskers. According to 247 Sports, offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield has flown to see the former quarterback. Satterfield is said to have met with former Baylor Bears quarterback Blake Shapen.

Marcus Satterfield is now on his way to Columbus, Ohio, to see Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord.

Satterfield is visiting Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen in Waco, Texas.

Nebraska’s quarterback room has put up historically awful stats this year, so Cornhusker Nation will welcome a new quarterback. While McCord has drawn criticism from Buckeye supporters, his 24 passing touchdowns this season would set a Nebraska Cornhuskers record.

This season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ quarterback play kept them from playing in a bowl game.

Satterfield and head coach Matt Rhule are desperate for a transfer portal quarterback after failing miserably on their first effort. Former Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims was highly regarded by Rhule heading into this season, but his tendency to make mistakes kept him from flourishing as a Husker quarterback. Sims led just 28 drives for the Cornhuskers this season owing to injuries and poor play, and 39% of those drives resulted in a turnover on his part.

After failing to make a bowl game for the first time since 2016 due to poor quarterback play after opening 5-3, the new Cornhusker coaching staff’s ability to evaluate quarterback skill will be put into question if they do not land a quarterback this year. Satterfield praised Sims in a preseason story for USA Today’s Cornhusker Wire, despite his turnover-prone nature at Georgia Tech.

Nebraska’s other two quarterback trials did not result in a six-win season. Heinrich Haarberg took over for Jeff Sims during the Colorado game after Sims was involved in four turnovers and suffered an ankle injury. Haarberg went on to complete 49% of his passes for the season before being benched in a mid-November game against Maryland after registering a 0.7 QBR after five throwing attempts.

Chubba Purdy, the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers MVP candidate Brock Purdy, was the Cornhuskers’ best answer at quarterback. Chubba Purdy only started two games and finished one for the Huskers, but the fact that he threw only one interception in each of those games made Cornhusker supporters think he was a huge upgrade.
