THE RAIDERS HAVE RELEASED ALL-PRO CB MARCUS PETERS.

Peters will now be placed on waivers, saving the Raiders $1.5 million that he was set to make.

Peters signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Raiders in late July after spending the most of the summer on the free agent market. He was promoted to starter and was expected to help the team’s underperforming secondary.

While Peters played the part to some extent, including returning an interception for a touchdown early in the season, his overall defensive effort was deemed suspect. He was notably poor in tackling assignments, prompting interim head coach Antonio Pierce to bench him in the Raiders’ 17-31 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Pierce confirmed to reporters on Monday morning that Peters will no longer be a member of the club going forward.

“We decided to move forward,” Pierce said when asked about Peters. “I had a fantastic conversation with (Peters) this morning.” “I’ll leave it there.”

According to reports, Peters’ lack of effort has put him at risk of being cut even earlier in the summer. Aside from saving money and releasing a player they felt was not committed enough, the move allows the Las Vegas organization to give veteran Jack Jones and youngster Jakorian Bennett more playing experience and evaluate them for the upcoming season.
